It was the winter of 1991 when Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall packed their bags and headed for Tahoe to snowboard. They were headed up with only one mission of riding powder. Every morning when they woke up they were treated to two feet of new snow. This typical Tahoe storm cycle led Richard to extend his trip for another week. It was during this week that the idea to start a clothing brand was hatched. Two weeks passed and Richard had quit his job, borrowed money from his dad, and hatched the name and the logo. Their name would be Volcom and the logo the stone. The fledgling brand would embody the times, “youth against establishment.” These ideas and the logo spread like wildfire and Volcom quickly took off. Now Volcom has cemented its place in the industry and the Volcom stone is one of the most identifiable brand images in the world.
