Originating on the gold coast of Australia, Billabong was the brainchild of Surfer, Shaper, and wave predicting guru Gordon Merchant. After years of chasing waves and spending over 300 days a year destroying every pair of boardshorts he owned, he decided it was time for a change. So he got together with Rena Merchant and they began producing their own handmade boardshorts. Their shorts were tough as nails and able to withstand even the most brutal and longest sessions on the Gold Coast. Thus, Billabong was born. From there, Gordon poured as much time and effort into redefining his boardshorts as he put into his surfing. His time and effort eventually lead to overseas distribution during the 80’s. From there, Billabong took off as a brand. Surging into the world market as a leader in surf apparel and clothing, Billabong quickly became the number one brand in Australia during the 90’s. Built from Gordon’s passion and vision, Billabong has continued to reinvent and push the limits of the Action Sports industry.
