Chris Waring tangles with Timmy Reyes, Micah Byrne and Jesse Merle-Jones in
the PRO Final of the Surf Ride $100,000 Pro-Am by Vans
Fresh off of his recent win at the Katin Team Challenge, Chris Waring of
Seal Beach continued his competitive surge with a huge win over a stellar
field at the Surf Ride $100,000 Freedom Pro-Am Surf Series by Vans.
“I’m so stoked to surf in a local California contest with a lot of my
friends and top pros like Timmy and the boys. I had a really good time
today, the groms were ripping and the vibe was all around perfect, I’m
excited about this series!”
Chris wasn’t the only competitor loving life however as the Freedom Series
also featured “Family Divisions” where Groms, Women and Masters duked it out
for huge prizes.
Nine year old competitor Dagan Stagg from Carlsbad was so excited to be
surfing with his hero Timmy Reyes, that he almost missed his heat while the
two were “hanging out”.
“I really enjoy surfing with the pros- I can’t believe how good they surf.
Watching them got me really excited to surf my heat!” said Dagan.
The surf was solid for the Ocean Beach Pier event and although bumpy it
provided plenty of scoring opportunities for the competitors.
Pro Finalist Micah Byrne shared his take on the quality of surfing at the
event: “The waves did look a bit mixed up at times from shore but once in
the heat there was definitely some clean sections. I can’t remember an
event with so many solid scores from an ASP trained panel of judges.
Everyone was absolutely ripping on the pro side.”
The event featured a family style barbecue compliments of the fine crew at
Vans and everyone gobbled to their hearts content. “There’s nothing more
American than the Freedom surf comp and a delicious hot dog right off the
grill” commented Masters Division winner Bryan Jennings as he partook of an
extra crispy dog.
“The vision for the event and the entire Surf Ride Pro-Am series is to
provide a great California surf contest where Pros and Family competitors
can come together and share a day of surf while providing for a worthy
cause. The event raised $1000 for the Camp Pendelton Kids Military Surf
Club, so we feel it was an all around great day.” Chris Williams Executive
Director
Surf Ride would like to thank all our generous sponsors: Vans, Dakine, XS

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Jan. 15, 2010) - Local surfer Chris Waring (Seal Beach, CA), 22, ousted fellow local Brad Ettinger (Huntington Beach, CA), 25, in an action packed Final to win the Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge presented by Primo for himself and Team Reef. Ettinger’s Team Hurley, last year’s reigning Team Champion, claimed the runner-up position.
The historic Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Specialty Event has a unique camaraderie-driven team-based format, with 20 four-man teams competing in an open-draw format. Team results were determined by the placement of individual surfers who received points in each heat (4 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd, 2 points for 3rd and 1 points for 4th place). More than $28,500 in cash and prizes was awarded.
Waring battled back to claim his first Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge victory after Ettinger posted the event’s only perfect 10-point ride with a lengthy barrel into the pier. Waring found a barrel of his own to earn a 9.53 out of 10, and quickly followed up with a 6.50 to overtake the goofy-footer, holding on for the win despite a valiant effort by Ettinger to bounce back.
“I just can’t believe it,” Waring said. “I don’t even know what to think right now. Brad (Ettinger) started off with that 10, so to come back and win is amazing. This is a special event for Huntington Beach, and it has such a great history. Now my name is going to be up there with all of the great surfers who have won this event in the past.”
In addition to taking out the personal victory, Waring’s standout performance carried Team Reef to victory over last year’s winner, Team Hurley, who finished second this year.
“I’m stoked that my team was able to win,” Waring said. “Getting the win on top of it for Reef, it just couldn’t have gone any better.”

BIG SCORES AND LEGENDARY APPEARANCES IN PUMPING CONDITIONS ON OPENING DAY OF KATIN PRO/AM TEAM CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY PRIMO
Event Concludes Tomorrow on the North Side of the Huntington Beach Pier
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Jan. 14, 2010 – The opening day of the Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge presented by Primo, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Specialty event, was graced with pumping six-to-eight foot surf at North Huntington Beach Pier today and saw Nick Rozsa (Oxnard, CA), 22, lead the front for Team Reef who finished the day in first.
The Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge offers a unique camaraderie-driven team-based format, with four-man teams out to compile their best results in their quest to claim both individual and team results. More than $28,500 in cash and prizes is up for grabs, not to mention bragging rights.
Rozsa, who was a former standout on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series, hasn’t been focusing his time on competition, but seemed to easily find his feet in today’s competition and posted the day’s highest single wave score of a 9.63 out of 10 while helping the Reef team launch out to an early lead.
“I don’t know, that thing just came out of nowhere,” Rozsa said. “There’s a ton of current and it’s pretty scary out there once you get close to the pier. It’s just fun to surf in a team event. It takes the pressure off of you since we all have to do well to win the contest.”
Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA), 28, opted for a change in equipment to negotiate the strong current pushing into Huntington Pier and his choice for a bigger board paid off while he nabbed the second-highest single wave score of the day, a near perfect 9.60 out of 10 with three powerful frontside gouges on a thundering righthander. The Huntington Beach regular-footer tagged another solid score into his score line while clinching the day’s highest heat total as well, a 17.43 out of 20, earning him a Kicker Digital Stereo System.
“There is so much water moving out there with the high tide,” Byrne said. “I rode a bigger board, a 6’3”, and the board still felt small out there. The paddle out is brutal, but I was able to get a couple of good scores.”
Byrne, surfing for Team Matix, is also taking some time to enjoy the long-running Huntington Beach event and the unique team format, which is a rarity in professional surfing.
“This is a fun event with the team format,” Byrne said. “There is a lot of talent in this event and it’s pretty much the same as doing an ASP 3-Star, but even if we’re not on the same team we’re all just cheering each other on.”
Tom Curren (Santa Barbara, CA), 45, who is a three-time ASP World Champion and two-time Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge winner (1982, 1987), found himself back in a jersey for Team Rip Curl at this year’s event and convincingly won his opening round heat more than 27 years after he first won the contest.
“This event brings back a lot of memories, a lot of good ones,” Curren said. “Back in the 80s, this was our (Californians) only chance to surf with all of the professional surfers. It’s nice to be back surfing in the event again.”
After today’s completion of Round 1, Team Reef leads with 16 points, followed by Team Surfline with 15 points, Team Fox with 14 points, Team Body Glove with 13 points, and last year’s reigning champion, Team Hurley with 12 pts.
The Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge presented by Primo will be back on tomorrow morning, January 15, 2010 beginning at 7:30 a.m. local time. A team and individual champion will be crowned by day’s end. The Awards ceremony will occur immediately following competition at approximately 3 p.m. at the Shorebreak Hotel.

Forecast Powered by Surfline:
On Friday the swell will be fading, but there will still be plenty of good size surf showing in the 4-7+ foot range through the morning hours, with a slow decreasing trend over the afternoon. Conditions look excellent: light offshore flow in the morning will turn light/variable in the afternoon and we expect clean conditions all day.”
