Much is at stake for field of 192, including qualifying points for the Assn. of Surfing Professionals' 2009 World Tour. Event also will feature first leg of Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series.

A major pro surfing competition begins today at Lower Trestles near San Clemente, just four days after a fatal shark attack occurred 30 miles down the coast.

But for many in the field of 192, there will be too much at stake in the Trestles lineup to be concerned about what lurks below.

The 6.0 Lowers Pro, sponsored by Nike and running through Saturday, is an $80,000 Assn. of Surfing Professionals qualifying contest with a 4-star rating -- worth valuable points for those trying to qualify or re-qualify for the 2009 World Tour.

The event also kicks off the Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series, an ASP North America specialty contest. The second and third legs are this summer and fall at Newport Beach and Santa Cruz.

Additionally, the $10,000 Oakley Pro Junior will enable stars of the next generation to showcase their surfing talent at one of the world's premiere point breaks.

At center stage, though, is the 6.0 Lowers Pro.

Nobody is more keenly aware of this event than Patrick Gudauskas, who was groomed on the waves at Trestles and currently sits atop the World Qualifying Series standings.

"Pat Gudauskas definitely represents the leading edge of the next wave of challengers," said Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew, ASP president and a former world champion. Gudauskas, 22, won the 2003 national amateur championship at Trestles, edging Ventura's Dane Reynolds, now a World Tour rookie ranked No. 11.

Gudauskas won the season-opening Sebastian Inlet Pro and has performed consistently enough since to hold his top WQS ranking.

Trestles' high-performance waves suit his hard-driving, lip-bashing style. But he is not the only Gudauskas competing there, nor the only story line. Among others:

* Dane Gudauskas, born three minutes after Patrick, is ranked 31st on the WQS. Dane and Tanner Gudauskas, ranked 65th, also will compete.

* Brett Simpson of Huntington Beach is ranked No. 8 on the WQS in his best-yet endeavor to make the World Tour.

* Chris Ward of San Clemente was an established star on the World Tour before his scandalous preseason fall from grace outside a Mammoth Lakes bar. Ward, 29, faces charges after allegedly assaulting three women with a block of ice and missed the World Tour season opener. He has been allowed to compete but sits in 46th and last place on the elite tour and may require a high WQS standing to requalify.

* Hawaii's Carissa Moore, 15, tabbed as a future women's world champion, is the lone female in the lineup, having been granted a sponsor wild card and advancement to the Round of 64.

Champs crowned at 2008 Hyundai Malfunction Surfing Fest

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 April, 2008 : - - The 2008 Hyundai Malfunction Surfing Festival celebrating its 25 year history for the first time at Kingscliff and enjoying the incredibly laid back village atmosphere and excellent surf over the five day event with more than 200 surfers competing from grommets to great grandfathers.

Unfortunately the swell was dying leading into Sunday’s finals with tricky 2ft waves and occasional bigger sets with slightly onshore bumpy waves on offer. The Malfunction had previously been held at Coolangatta over the past 24 years but was forced to shift south of the border to a whole new venue after crowd problems at Rainbow Bay.

Local surfers and businesses have applauded the change and welcomed the Hyundai Malfunction Surfing Festival with open arms and big back slaps. Apart from the extensive contest program of 13 categories and over 200 competitors, there was a huge social entertainment program with at Domain Casuarina with art/photo exhibitions, Nat Young’s latest book launch, surfing memorabilia auctions, surf vehicle rally, and local longboard legend and musician Lucas Proudfoot and his band Max Judo at the Salt Bar just all added to a fantastic week of surfing and entertainment.

For the second year in a row Dane Pioli (Eschol Park, Wollongong, NSW), 24 years old, and now based at Snapper Rocks (QLD), won the prestigious Surf Tech Mens Professional (WLQS) final on 14 out of 20 points, in a high profile heat featuring Australian longboard champion Harley Ingleby (Coffs Harbour) who finished 2nd on 13.53 out of 20 points, and former world surfing champion Josh Constable (Noosa) in 3rd on 13.33 out of 20 points, and Delmaney Points Ray Lawrence (Batemans Bay) in 4th on 8.33 out of 20 points.

So close was the blue ribbon event of the 2008 Hyundai Malfunction Surfing Festival that only decimal points separated from 1st to 3rd in deteriorating onshore 2ft waves at Main Beach, Kingscliff. Josh Constable (Noosa) got off to an early lead with a 7.5 on his first ride. He quickly backed that up on his second ride with a 5.83 to extend his lead.

Harley Ingleby (Coffs Harbour) managed to overtake Josh coming up to the half way mark with a 6.17 for his first ride and then posted a 6.93 just before the half way make to take the lead. As he did last year Dane Pioli (Wollongong) waited patiently and with 10 minutes to go overtook his high profile rivals with an 8 point excellent ride to be in contention. While Josh and Harley struggled to beat their scores, Pioli finished off with a 6 point ride to narrowly win his second year in a row Hyundai Malfunction Surfing Festival Surf Tech Mens Professional (WLQS) final.

Josh Constable after two ASP Australasia Pro Rated Longboard Events, with a win at Noosa and now second at Kingscliff leads the Australian Mens LQS Ratings. Dane Pioli has now moved into second and Harley Ingleby in third on the Australian Longboard Ratings.

Defending womens champion of the Hyundai Malfunction Surfing Festival, Chelsea Williams, 22 years (Tweed Coast, NSW), won the Surf Tech Womens Professional (WLQS) final. Australia’s number 1 womens longboard rider and rated 3rd in the world, did not drop a heat throughout the womens professional division.

In a low scoring final Chelsea posted 9.33 out of 20 points to just out score Brisbane based Rosie Locke on 8.73 out of 20 placing second. Selby Riddle of Rainbow Bay (Qld) on 8 points out of 20 finished third and former Kingscliff girl now based in Byron Bay, Tessa Davidson fourth on 6.9 out of 20 points.

In the Honolua Stand Up Paddle Boards the grand-nephew of Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor, Kerien Taylor (Hawaii) now living at Currumbin, won his first SUP final from fellow Currumbin stand up paddle boarder Woody Jack.

Kerien scored 14.33 out of 20 points and Woody Jack 10.44 out of 20 points. In 3rd position was sponsor of the Honolua Stand Up Paddle Boards, Guy Walker (Byron Bay), on 9.90 out of 20 points, and Kingscliff’s Ray Gleave featuring in his first stand up paddle board final finished 4th on 8.83 out of 20 points.

Kingscliff’s King of the Longboards, Ray Gleave qualified for three finals, the only competitor to do so, and won one out of three. Taking out the ANZ Kingscliff Over 40s final, Ray top scored with an 8 point ride and total score of 15.57 out of 20 points to win from Gold Coast City Life Guard Grant Davies (Southport) on 12.60 out of 20 points.

Currumbin’s Bianca Anstiss won her first 9ft Amateur Open Womens Division on 8.90 out of 20 points from fellow rival Caloundra’s Monique Keane on 8.67 out of 20 points.

Dukes Longboards Over 50s was won by current Australian Over 50s longboard champion, Peter Becker (Murwillumbah) with 9.74 out of 20 points and claiming his first Hyundai Malfunction Surfing Festival title. Perennial Australian longboard competitor Mike Pimm (Tweed Coast) placed a close second on 9.37 out of 20 points.

Epic conditions roll into Brims Ness for day five of The Highland Open    > Francaise ci dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 April, 2008 : - - Thurso -- It was a day for the big name surfers to shine as The O’Neill Highland Open by Swatch moved into the second round. But it wasn’t just the surfers who were putting on a great show at Brims Ness.

Conditions here in the north of Scotland finally sorted themselves out and in the words of event commentator, Dave Mailman; “We’ve got five to six foot of swell, offshore winds and sunny skies. What more could you ask for from a 6 star prime ASP WQS event.”

The answer to that was provided in the drama that unfolded throughout the day. Last year’s winner, Australian Nathan Hedge just squeezed through, needing a wave in the dying seconds of his heat in order to move up into second position.  “I couldn’t hear anything from the water,” said Nathan. “I thought I was either third or last. I had no idea I came second.

“Sometimes I feel the pressure of being the defending champion,” he said. “But on the other hand I have to think that I am the defending champion for a reason so I just have to remember that.”

Having arrived here 10 days ago, Nathan has been enjoying all the surrounds of this unique event. “This event is so special because you get really thrown into the culture and environment here,” he said. It’s just the farmers and the locals. Nothing has been affected by this surfing contest.”

Jay Thompson and Tiago Pires are the two ASP World Tour rookie surfers who have come back here to Scotland this year. Despite discovering the joys of a few pints of Guinness yesterday, Australian Jay Thompson managed to get through his heat to the next round.  “It’s a world away from something like Teahupoo where I am going next,” he said. “But this is such a great event and I am so happy to have got through.”

Tiago Pires also made it through his heat today at The Point at Brims before it moved to The Bowl on the shift of the tide. “I decided to do the first half of the year on the WQS,” Tiago said. “It’s good to do just incase. The first year on the ASP World Tour is not an easy one. You don’t have the same experience as some of these other guys.”

Tiago is the first Portuguese surfer to ever qualify for the ASP World Tour. “I made it a personal goal of mine when I was 18 years old to qualify. Coming from Portugal, I didn’t have anyone to follow,” he said. “I have been carving my own path.” The biggest shock of the day was the departure of last year’s runner up, Jarrad Howse. The Australian dominated most of his heat only to fall into third during the last few minutes.

The other unexpected exits on day five included Patrick Gudauskas, the current ASP WQS tour leader, as well as his two brothers, Tanner and Dane. The next call will be Wednesday April 28 at 8.00am. The O’Neill Highland Open by Swatch runs from 23 to 30 April. It’s not for the faint-hearted - but it is the place where you’ll see the best surfing in Britain this year.

The O’Neill Highland Open by Swatch is organized by O’Neill and supported by Swatch, Red Bull, EventScotland, Visit Scotland and HIE Caithness & Sutherland.

The History of the O’Neill Highland Open by Swatch
The Highland Open was first staged in April 2006. Thurso had long been known to hardcore UK surfers as the home of one of the most serious and demanding waves in Europe, but it took O’Neill’s decision to stage a major WQS contest to put the town on the world surfing map.

In 2007, the Highland Open again proved a massive hit among WQS surfers – not to mention the people of Thurso. But as well as the location, its success owes much to the O’Neill philosophy. As O’Neill event director Bernhard Ritzer puts it: “We aim to provide everyone - from surfers right through to event staff - with an authentic taste of life on Scotland’s North Shore.

The event is integrated as much as possible into the town of Thurso, so that everyone mixes freely with the local community. We’ve also experienced a number of classic Scottish traditions including a whiskey tour and tasting session at Old Pulteney Distillery, and a fantastic dinner at Ackergill Tower Castle. And as each year goes by, we get to know more of the local characters and diehard surfers – the people who help to make this remote town so special.”

Legends of the Highland Open – Chris Noble
Chris Noble isn’t the first man to surf Thurso East, but he might just have racked up more sessions there than anyone else. Formerly a fisherman from Fraserburgh, Chris started surfing when he was 13. He once spent an entire February at sea but moved eight years ago to Thurso for its surf. He lives in a house overlooking the legendary reef, never misses a swell and knows the reef like the back of his hand. Wiry and laconic, Chris sums up the appeal of Thurso East:

“Sure, we get blocks of ice going ‘clunk clunk’ on your board in the winter – the ice floats down the frozen River Thurso and into the line-up – but we get seals, dolphins, sea otters and waves that are just perfect. All I want to do is surf those waves.”

The O’Neill Story: From Ocean Beach to the Highland Open
Jack O’Neill created O’Neill in 1952, after he had moved to San Francisco and discovered the cold-water joys of surfing Ocean Beach. As much a sailor, hot air balloon pilot and serial inventor as a surfer, Jack always knew instinctively what his fellow ocean lovers were looking for. Among many other innovations, Jack’s pioneering development of the wetsuit meant that before long surfers were riding more waves, and riding them better, in large measure because they could enjoy longer sessions in cold water.

By 1980, Jack’s shop, which began as the classic surfer’s garage outfit, had metamorphosed into a leading global surfing company. Remarkably, even now - at the age of 84 - Jack’s energy and passion for the ocean continue to define O’Neill. The company’s ethos is born of its Northern California roots, as Jack continues his mission to pursue and popularise the environmental projects that have become synonymous with O’Neill. Chief among them is the O’Neill Sea Odyssey programme, begun in 1996. In the US, this is a free, educational cruise aboard the Team O’Neill catamaran that acquaints children with the microbiology of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. For as Jack says: “The best thing I have ever done in my life was to bring those kids to the ocean.”

Swatch
Swatch, kicked off in 1982 by Nicolas G. Hayek, today is a leading Swiss watch and jewelry maker and one of the world’s most fashionable brands.

L’histoire d’ O’Neill: De Ocean Beach à l’ Highland Open
